This month's feature is Part II of musicians / artists that have collaborated with Tool on the band's recordings between 1992 and 2001. SALIVAL "Third Eye" - Dr. Timothy Leary (spoken word) Best known for his countercultural battle cry, "Tune in, turn on, drop out", Dr. Timothy Leary (www.leary.com) (1920-1996) was a psychiatrist who became fascinated with mind-expanding drugs (especially LSD) in the 1960s and vociferously advocated their use in treatment. After serving time for the possession of marijuana and for escaping, Leary spent most of his life advocating through lecture tours, stand-up comedy, books, spoken word recordings, self-help videos (like Timothy Leary - How to Operate Your Brain (1993), the source of the spoken word on "Third Eye"), and the Internet. Leary's production company Retina Logic was, at once, staffed by Camella Grace, Adam Jones' wife and Tool concert projectionist. Leary succumbed to prostate cancer at age 76 in 1996. "Third Eye" - Vince de Franco (synthesizer) Vince de Franco is a synthesizer player that has been, of late, producing and engineering recordings for Melvins and The Fantômas Melvins Big Band. deFranco is also a member of the band Tropic and is an avid electronc instrument inventor having created electronic percussion currently being used live by Danny Carey. "Pushit" - Aloke Dutta (tabla) At Tool's 1998 mini-tour shows, the band welcomed Danny Carey's tabla teacher and friend, Aloke Dutta (www.alokedutta.com) onstage to open shows and to guest on the extended arrangement of "Pushit". Tabla are a pair of small different-sized hand drums used especially in the music of India. Carey has been a student of Dutta's since meeting him in Austin, Texas in 1997. His other students have included Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson), Terry Bozzio, and Roy "Future Man" Wooten (Béla Fleck and the Flecktones). Dutta is now teaching and performing in Los Angeles. He has produced an instructional video (Tabla Techniques), two instructional books (Tabla: Lessons and Practice and Poetic Drumming), and Aloke Dutta - The Window (2000), a full-length live recording. "Message to Harry Manback II" - David Bottrill (keyboards) [see "Message to Harry Manback" in last month's feature] "You Lied" - King Buzzo (second guitar) Buzz Osborne, AKA King Buzzo, is the singer, songwriter, and guitarist for Melvins (www.melvins.com) [see April 2002 feature], Tool's perennial opening band since 1996. He is also the guitarist for Fantômas, who opened for the band in 2001. During Tool's 1998 tour, Buzz often joined the band onstage for ive covers of Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" and Peach's "You Lied", the latter being included on Salival (2000). He continues to record and tour with Melvins and Fantômas The bands' latest recordings are Melvins - Hostile Ambient Takeover (2002) (which includes Adam Jones guesting on keyboards) and Fantômas - Delirium Cordia (2004), respectively. LATERALUS "Triad" - Statik (machines) Eric Anest, AKA Statik, is a sound programmer that has worked with artists as diverse as Powerman 5000 and Leonard Cohen. His recording relationship with Tool dates back to his machine work on Undertow (1993) and his remix of Replicants [see January 2002 feature] "Destination Unknown" (1995). Statik is half of the Los Angeles-based electronica duo, Collide (www.collide.net). The band's latest release is Collide - Some Kind of Strange (2003) on which he provided noise as well as production, engineering, and mixing. Statik joined Tool onstage in November 2001 to perform "Triad" at the band's show in Irvine, CA. "Faaip de oiad" - Art Bell (spoken word) Art Bell (www.artbell.com) is the host of Coast-to-Coast AM, a nightly radio program that transmits from Pahrump NV near Area 51. The show's primary topics are aliens / grays, UFOs, Area 51, time travel, remote viewing, ghosts, The Quickening, free energy, and crop circles. "Faaip de oiad" features an excerpt of a call Bell received on September 12, 1997 from an allegedly "former employee" of Area 51. Eerily, the call was cut short when the network's communication satellite suddenly lost 50 channels (including Bell's feed). The caller had warned that his former employers would "triangulate on [his] position really soon" leading many to believe that he was censored or captured. Artists and artistry mentioned in this feature: Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, Art Bell, David Bottrill, Terry Bozzio, Leonard Cohen, Collide, Aloke Dutta, Fantômas, The Fantômas Melvins Big Band, King Crimson, Dr. Timothy Leary, Ted Nugent, Buzz "King Buzzo" Osborne / Melvins, Peach, Powerman 5000, Replicants, and Tool.
