1.6 - Does Tool endorse this discography?

Although the band is aware of this resource and have been positive, it is not formally endorsed by the band. We have not made any attempt to have this resource endorsed by the band, either.

In early 2000, Tool recognized toolshed.down.net as Fan Web Site of the Year 2000. It is an honour that this discography shares.

1.7 - What is the history of this discography?

Shane Brouse created this discography back in 1994 for Will Pierce. Will had the very first Tool site that ever existed. Shane met Kabir Akhtar through the original Tool mailing-list @visix. Kabir maintained a Tool FAQ for Will's site.

Kabir and Shane decided to jump ship and Kabir started his own Tool site (which would become toolshed.down.net) in 1995. It had only three sections, one of which was the discography.

Due to space constrictions, the discography was moved to a different server in 1997. It is still maintained exclusively for tdn.

In 2000, we finally registered and pointed www.tooldiscography.com

    1.8 - What is the discography's affiliation with Amazon.com?

The discography is a member of Amazon.com's Affiliates program. We make a small percentage of revenue on purchases made via this site at Amazon.com. we can use the store credit to purchase goods at Amazon.com. This helps us balance the costs of running this site.

    2.0 - COMMERCIAL RELEASES

Information in this section assumes the reader does not own the recording in question. Please refer to the tdn FAQ for additional specific information about these recordings.

2.1 - How many official commercial releases are there?

    There are six:

    Opiate (1992)
    Undertow (1993)
    Ænima (1996)
    Salival (2000)
    Lateralus (2001)
    10,000 days (2006)

    2.2 - Opiate

Opiate is Tool's début major-label release, a mixture of studio and live songs in EP format. The studio songs were recorded in Van Nuys CA, USA in 1991. The live songs were recorded in Hollywood CA, USA in December 1991 / January 1992 (New Year's eve). The CD was released on March 10, 1992 on Zoo/BMG Records (North America) and later re-released by Volcano Records and by Volcano Entertainment II / Tool Dissectional. Opiate was certified gold in the USA on January 12, 1996 and certified platinum in the USA on April 1, 2005.

2.2.1 - Why are there so many catalogue numbers?

The vinyl version of Opiate was remastered and re-released (72445-11027-1 E2) with previously unavailable artwork in 1996. Catalogue numbers have also changed with the transition from Zoo Records (72445- prefix) to Volcano Records (61422- prefix).

2.2.2 - "The Gaping Lotus Experience" is not on the tracklist?

After about 50 seconds of silence after "Opiate", the song "The Gaping Lotus Experience" starts (at approximately 6:10).

"The Gaping Lotus Experience" does not appear on the cassette version of Opiate.

    2.3 - Undertow

Undertow is Tool's 2nd studio recording. It was recorded in Hollywood CA, USA in 1993. The CD was released on April 6, 1993 on Zoo/BMG Records (North America) and later re-released by Volcano Records and by Volcano Entertainment II / Tool Dissectional. Undertow was certified two times platinum in the USA on May 14, 2001.

2.3.1 - Why are there so many catalogue numbers?

The vinyl version of Undertow was remastered and re-released (72445-11052-1 E1) with previously unavailable artwork in 1996. Catalogue numbers have also changed with the transition from Zoo Records (72445- prefix) to Volcano Records (61422- prefix). The CD was also available from BMG Music Service (BG2-11052).

2.3.2 - The CD tracklist indicates that there are 10 tracks?

Although "Disgustipated" is listed as track 10, it can be found on track 69 on most CDs. The song might be track 10 or 30 on some CDs.

2.3.3 - Are there differences in the vinyl releases?

The disk was pressed on on blue, translucent, and black vinyl.

    2.4 - Ænima

Ænima is Tool's 3rd studio recording. It was recorded in Hollywood and North Hollywood CA, USA in 1995-1996. The CD was released on October 1, 1996 on Volcano Records (North America) and later re-released by Volcano Entertainment II / Tool Dissectional. Ænima was certified three times platinum in the USA on March 4, 2003.

2.4.1 - Why are there so many catalogue numbers?

Catalogue numbers have changed with the transition from Zoo Records (72445- prefix) to Volcano Records (61422- prefix).

2.4.2 - Does the sleeve artwork vary between countries?

Ænima is available in a non-lenticular jewel case in some countries. The sleeve artwork is not (as music stores call it) "animated" or "3-dimensional". The sleeve artwork differs from the North American release most noticeably with the addition of artwork of fictitious Tool recordings, including:

    Gay Rodeo
    Bethlehem Abortion Clinic
    Two Weiners for Daddy
    The Other White Meat
    Bad Breath
Crapsteaks Smothered in Dictators (A collection of B-sides)
    3 Fat Brown Fingers
    Nurse Ketimella's Kit*chen
    Iced Pee
    Mungey the Clown
Brown Magic and the Big Appetites (Music from the Movie Soundtrack Jelly Donut)(live)
    Spring Boner
    Tetanus for Breakfast
Just Up That Dirt Road (Tool Live! At the Acropolis)
    The Christmas Album

2.4.3 - The Bill Hicks samples in "Third Eye"

The Bill Hicks (www.billhicks.com) samples in "Third Eye" are from "Drugs Have Done Good Things" found on Bill Hicks - Relentless (1992/1997) and from "The War on Drugs" found on Bill Hicks - Dangerous (1990/1997).

    2.5 - Salival

Salival is Tool's 4th release, a DVD/CD or VHS/CD box set also containing a 56-page booklet. The DVD/VHS contains music videos while the CD contains a mixture of studio and live songs. The studio recordings were made in Hollywood CA, USA between 1992 and 1996. The live recording were made in Salt Lake City UT, Portland OR, San Diego CA, and Denver CO, USA in 1998. The set was released on December 12, 2000 on Volcano Entertainment II / Tool Dissectional (North America).

2.5.1 - Why is this recording so hard to find? Is it truly limited edition?

When Salival was released in December 2000, only about 150,000 copies were made. In this first run, the accompanying booklet was rife with spelling errors. Despite being released so late in 2000, the set was one of the best-selling homevideo releases of the year.

Consequently, the set became difficult to find through January 2001 until the mistakes were corrected and a second (corrected) run was completed. In April 2001, VHS versions of the set became scarce. It is rumoured that only 2,000 PAL versions of the videocassette were released in the UK.

The DVD versions are not region-specific.

2.5.2 - What are the sources of the Tool songs on this recording?

    "Part of Me" and "Hush"
found on Tool - Opiate (1992)

    "Prison Sex" and "Sober"
found on Tool - Undertow (1993)

"Stinkfist", "Pushit", "Ænema", and "Third Eye"
found on Tool - Ænima (1996)

2.5.3 - "Hush" is not on the tracklist?

The video for "Hush" is included on the DVD but not the VHS version of Salival. Although it is not readily noticeable, it can be accessed from one of the "hands" on the DVD menu screen.

2.5.4 - The Dr. Timothy Leary sample in "Third Eye"

The Dr. Timothy Leary sample in "Third Eye" is from Timothy Leary - How to Operate Your Brain (1993).

2.5.5 - Who wrote and popularized "You Lied"?

The song was written by Justin Chancellor, Ben Durling, Rob James, and Simon Oakes, and recorded by their band, Peach. The original can be found on Peach - Giving Birth to a Stone (1994 & 2000).

2.5.6 - Who wrote and popularized "No Quarter"?

The song was written by John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant and recorded by their band, Led Zeppelin. The original can be found on Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy (1973).

    2.5.7 - What is "LAMC"?

"LAMC" (track 08) is an acronym for 'Los Angeles Municipal Court'.

2.5.8 - "Maynard's Dick" is not on the tracklist?

After about 20 seconds of silence after "LAMC", the song "Maynard's Dick" starts (at approximately 7:10). The song is sometimes referred to as "La pica de Maynardo".

2.5.9 - Where can I find more information on the videos on Salival?

Salival is listed in the Internet Movie Database (IMDb).

    2.6 - Lateralus

Lateralus is Tool's 4th studio recording and 5th release. It was recorded in Hollywood and North Hollywood CA, USA in 2000-2001. The CD was released on May 15, 2001 on Volcano Entertainment II / Tool Dissectional. Lateralus was certified two times platinum in the USA on August 5, 2003.

    2.6.1 - The vinyl version

In May 2001, preorders for Lateralus included a vinyl version that became "indefinitely delayed" as its June 2001 release date approached. In the December 2001, the toolband.com newsletter it was said that Volcano II is contractually obligated to release Tool's recording in vinyl format and that version of Lateralus will have to split "Disposition | Reflection | Triad" over two sides.

Lateralus was released on LP in August 2005. The format is a double-vinyl effort on 4 picture discs, packaged in a special plastic gatefold with holographic foil.

2.6.2 - What's the difference between CD versions listing track 09 as "Lateralis" vs. "Lateralus"?

Nothing. It was a spelling error limited to the first million printings.

2.6.3 - The Art Bell samples in "Faaip de oiad"

The Art Bell (www.artbell.com) samples in "Faaip de oiad" are from a September 12, 1997 broadcast of his radio show, Coast-to-Coast AM which transmits from Pahrump NV near Area 51.

2.7 - Parabola and Schism DVDs

In June 2001, Tool announced that a DVD single would be released for "Schism" before Christmas 2001. In April 2002, rumours began to circulate that the band still intended to release the DVD and that it would be available sometime during the band's May / June stint with Ozzfest 2002 in Europe.

On December 20, 2005, Tool will release two DVD singles for "Schism" and "Parabola" with "extras".

    3.0 - SINGLES

3.1 - What's the difference between Tool singles and Tool promos?

Tool singles are commercially-available (while they are in print) and include live material. Tool promos are not commercially-available (it is against the law to sell them) and meant for radio stations and "freebies". Promos (usually) include two songs: the album version and a shortened or censored version of one song, or selections from an official release.

3.2 - Where can I find CD singles?

The singles are out-of-print and difficult to find. Try the Global Electronic Music Marketplace (www.gemm.com) or eBay (www.ebay.com).

    3.3 - Prison Sex

    3.3.1 - What's on the cover?

Artwork by Todd Tomlinson (signed as TT).

    3.3.2 - Pressings and packaging

The disk (74321 19432-1) was pressed on white or marbled vinyl

The CDs are packaged in slimline jewel cases or cardboard sleeves. The UK version (74321 19432-2) is packaged in a slimline jewel case. The other two singles, however different, were given the same catalogue number (74321-19049-2) but are packaged in a slimline jewel case (the 4-song German version) or a cardboard sleeve (the 5-song Australian version).

    3.4 - Sober

    3.4.1 - What's on the cover?

One of the "Medicine Twins" by artist Cam de Leon.

3.4.2 - What is Sober - Tales from the Darkside?

Also known to collectors as Sober + 8, this recording is a CD single imported from the Netherlands where it was released by Zoo/BMG. Its namesake is a now-out-of-print bootleg released in 1993 by Kiss the Stone Records.

3.4.2.1 - Is it the same as the bootleg?

Yes. It contains the same songs.

3.4.2.2 - What's the story behind this recording?

Kiss the Stone created the Tales from the Darkside bootleg from a six-song Westwood One Radio Networks live CD called High Voltage (see Promotional Releases) and added two extra songs. The band retaliated: "as you know, we hate bootlegs. so we attached the bootleg to some european releases to squash the import cost." (see also 5.5)

    3.4.3 - Pressings and packaging

The CDs are packaged in slimline jewel cases or cardboard sleeves. The Tales from the Darkside (Dutch) version (74321 22604 2) is packaged in a slimline jewel case. The other two DE and AU singles, however different, were given the same catalogue number (74321 21849 2) but are packaged in a slimline jewel case and a cardboard sleeve (respectively) and list the same tracks.

The CD in the slimline jewel case erroneously lists track 01 as "Sober (album version)" when it is actually, "Sober (edit)".

    4.0 - IMPORTS AND ANOMALIES

    4.1 - Where can I find imports?

Try the Global Electronic Music Marketplace (www.gemm.com), eBay, (www.ebay.com), or CDEurope (www.cdeurope.com).

4.1.1 - Why haven't you included the German imports?

"Tool" is also the name of a trance/ambient band from Germany. Extasy, All I Need Is, and Return of the Gold are three of their releases. Be careful.

    4.2 - Undertow (double CD)

4.2.1 - Are the live songs on the second disc the same as found on Sober - Tales from the Darkside?

    Yes.

    4.3 - Undertow (clean)

4.3.1 - Are the songs on this CD censored?

No. Apart from the artwork being different, this CD is no different than the standard version of Undertow. The liner notes include a coupon that can be used to receive the standard artwork. However, it is unknown whether this offer is still valid. The note explaining this version of the CD and the offer can be found here.

    5.0 - PROMOTIONAL RELEASES

    5.1 - Where can I find promos?

Try the Global Electronic Music Marketplace (www.gemm.com) or eBay (www.ebay.com).

    5.2 - Tool (72826) - the 4-track demos

5.2.1 - Where can I get this recording?

These cassettes were only available for a limited time. Try eBay (www.ebay.com).

    5.3 - Undertow (ZP11052-1)

Known to collectors as the "grey vinyl Undertow", this is a 12" version of Undertow minus "Disgustipated". It is packaged in a relatively plain jacket with no sleeve art. The majority of the disks were pressed on grey vinyl with a minority pressed on translucent vinyl.

    5.4 - Sober (ZP17121-2)

    5.4.1 Cover or no cover?

Many collectors are most familiar with this CD having only a back insert (depicting staples closing a wound in Maynard's head) and the CD being screened with a collage of forks. Front cover inserts for promo CDs are often flimsy and are lost or discarded.

    5.5 - Westwood One - High Voltage

The Westwood One - High Voltage CD contains Tool's live performance of August 6, 1993 at Lollapalooza in Irwindale, CA. It was recorded and edited for North American radio stations by Westwood One. Tool's performance is actually on disc two of a two-CD set. The first CD features a live performance by Type O Negative. (see also 3.4.2)

    5.6 - Ænima Advance (ZMJ 11O87) - studio master

    5.6.1 - What is a "studio master"?

A recording that, presumably, has been mastered at the same studio it has been mixed at. Most recordings are mastered at a mastering facility. For security purposes (since this was a CD made before Ænima was released for public consumption), the cardboard sleeve has been numbered.

    5.7 - Selections from Ænima (ZP17210-2)

5.7.1 - How was this CD packaged?

This CD was released in a regular jewel case without a front insert in the US and in a slimline jewel case in the UK.

    5.8 - The 10" promo (ZP17211-1) - aka Stinkfist

    5.8.1 - What's on the cover?

    The "Medicine Twins".

    5.9 - The 12" promo (ZP17666-1) - aka Cesaro Summability

    5.9.1 - What's on the cover?

Side A is a reproduction of Pneuma I by Ramiro Rodriguez. Side B is a reproduction of Almus, also by Rodriguez. Pneuma I is owned and copyrighted by Tool.

5.9.2 - How many were made?

Only 5,000 copies of this recording were produced.

5.10 - Limited Edition in Conjunction with Kerrang! (FCKU 2)

    5.10.1 - What is Kerrang!?

Kerrang! (www.kerrang.com) is a hard rock magazine based in the UK.

    5.11 - Ænema (VP37231-2)

5.11.1 - What are the AM and PM versions of Ænema?

"Ænema" is listed as AM and PM versions on the CD. The AM version is edited (and appears in the discography as an edit) and the PM version is intact (and appear in the discography as the album version).

    5.12 - Salival Advance (VOL31158-2 / 9210102P)

5.12.1 - What is the difference between this and the official Salival release?

Salival Advance is only the CD in a Digi-Pak case (VOL31158-2) or slimline jewel case (9210102P) from the CD/DVD or CD/VHS set.

    6.0 - SONGS

    6.1 - No rarities?

There are no unreleased Tool songs on non-Tool recordings or compilations.

6.2 - Outtakes, rarities, remixes, and red herrings

There are several bootleg CDs that have been/are being sold at eBay (www.ebay.com) as "rarities" CDs. Some of the songs on these CDs are not Tool songs. The following is a guide.

Amazing Grace / Tool + Tori Amos

"Amazing Grace / Til the Chicken", Tori Amos' duet with bassist George Porter Jr. is sometimes credited to "Tool and Tori Amos". The song can be found on Tori Amos - Talula (1996). (see also Tori Amos in 9.8).

Calling Dr. Love (see Shandi's Addiction in 9.8)

    Comfortably Numb

Tool has never performed or recorded a cover version of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb". Versions available are (apparently) a mislabelled demo version of the song by Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour.

    Commando

During the latter half of the Lateralus tour, Tool covered Ramones' "Commando", dedicating the song to Joey (Ramone) and Dee Dee (Ramone) who died in 2001 and 2002, respectively. Versions available are bootleg live audio.

6.3 - What ever happened to...?

Tool and Rage Against the Machine were rumoured to have recorded a song for Various Artists - Judgment Night (1993) that was not included. In 1998, a song surfaced that seemed to support this (see also Judgment Night / (Kill the) Revolution above).

In a 1994 co-interview with R.I.P. magazine, Henry Rollins mentioned to Maynard that he was trying to get Tool on Various Artists - Johnny Mnemonic (1995), a film he was appearing in. It never happened.

Tool's cover of "No Quarter" was intended for release on Various Artists - Encomium: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin (1995) but the band was not willing to edit the song for length. The song was remastered and released on Tool - Salival (2000) instead.

Howard Stern approached Zoo Records to have "No Quarter" included on Various Artists - Private Parts (1997). Although the record company agreed, the band did not, leading to years of Stern badmouthing the band.

And, no...the fact that Helmet is on 3 of the 4 above soundtracks has nothing to do with Tool's decision to not participate.
